OTRA has been on the scene in New Orleans since 2002, when bassist Sam Price (Honey Island Swamp Band) fell under the spell of the syncopated rhythms of Cuban music. After performing with other New Orleans-area latin bands (Fredy Omar con su Banda, Acoustic Swiftness, Vivaz, Elegant Gypsy) Price was inspired to create an original group that emphasized creativity, jazz improvisation and powerful grooves while honoring the Afro-Cuban roots of latin music. 'Todo Pa'la Gente' (everything for the people) was released in 2004 to rave reviews. The debut CD won 'Best Latin/World Album' by Offbeat magazines' Best of the Beat awards, and was included in the 2004 'Top 10 CDs by Louisiana Artists' lists of Times-Picayune, Offbeat magazine and Where Y'at magazine. Over the years OTRA has featured a changing cast of heavyweight jazz and world musicians. Original timbalero Cristobal 'El Cañon' Cruzado and conguero 'Pupi' Menes established a tradition of driving percussion and irresistible swing while founding pianist/guitarist Rob Block brought advanced compositional and arranging skills to the band. Saxophonist Brent Rose is the only original member (other than Price) who currently remains a part of the band. His leadership in the horn section and incendiary soloing help define the OTRA sound. Other notable musicians who have contributed over the years: Eric Lucero - trumpet Joe Ashlar - piano Bob Garrett - trumpet Tim Green - Saxophone Today the group is comprised of some of New Orleans most talented musicians including Rose, Leon 'Kid Chocolate' Brown-trumpet, Eduardo Tozzatto-piano, Michael Skinkus-batá and percussion, Gabriel Velasco-timbales, and featuring recent arrival from Cuba, Alexey Marti on congas.
