Paulina Susana
Rubio Dosamantes, born in Mexico City on the 17th June 1971, is a
singer, actor, driver, model and Mexican business woman who has sold
over 20 million discs around the world throughout her recording career
(until 2010).
She is the daughter of the Mexican actor Susana Dosamantes and of a lawyer of Spanish ancestry Enrique Rubio († 2011), and she has an older brother. On the 30th of April 2007, she married the Spanish businessman Nicolás Vallejo-Nájera ‘Colate'. 3 years afterwards, the 14th November 2010 the singer gave light to her first son, whom they named Andrea Nicolás Vallejo-Nágera Rubio.
Paulina Rubio became known in her native
country with the youth group Timbiriche in 1981, and the group
separated in 1991, after having recorded 10 studio albums. She started
her solo career in the 90s with the label EMI, with whom she recorded 4
studio albums. Of these, the two first ones ‘La Chica Dorada' (1992) and
24 Kilates (1993) put her as one of the most commercially successful
young singers in her native country. Her following productions, El
Tiempo Es Oro (1995) and Planeta Paulina (1996) made her recognized in
other Latin American countries. After a legal issue with EMI Music, the
singer rejected the contract, paying a large amount of money involved.
Despite this, in the first decade of the
21st century she obtained a new contract with Universal Music Group.
With a new step, the singer released her 5th and 6th albums, Paulina
(200) and Border Girl (2002), with those she had commercial success in
Latin America and certain parts of Europe; the first of these discs was
awarded awards, nominations and sales. According to the Revista
Billboard the disc was placed as the most sold Latin album in the United
States in 2001 and it received a double diamond disc for more than 2.5
million units sold around the world.
Paulina and Border Girl have
sold more than 7,000,000 and 5,000,000 respectively. Her successive
albums, Pau-Latina (2004) and Ananda (2006) strengthened Paulina's place
internationally, marking her success with every single sold. Later on,
her newest and last piece of work, for the moment, Gran City Pop (2009)
meant she arrived at a concept that is fresher, more original and that
focuses on a single vision, that reflects the life and musical
experiences of the singer.
For their part, some of the singles that have marked her musical career are ‘Mío', ‘Enomarada', ‘El ultimo adíos', ‘Y yo sigo aquí', ‘Don't say goodbye', ‘Baila Casanova', ‘Te quise tanto', ‘Ni una sola palabra' y ‘Causa y Efecto'. From 35 official singles, 14 of those were at the top of the popularity lists in Mexico. One of the biggest successes that Paulina has had; ‘Y yo sigo aquí', was placed at the top of the charts in over 30 countries. Another of hers; ‘Ni Una Sola Palabra' went triple platinum in Spain.
Paulina Rubio is considered one of the most influential Latin celebrities. According to E! Entertainment, the singer placed number 12 on the 25 Sexiest Pop Divas.
