DARRYL ADAMS’ TORNADO BRASS BAND, established in 1975, is a six-piece traditional jazz band based in New Orleans, Louisiana. Highly influenced by DeJean’s Olympia Brass Band this group works hard to keep alive the traditional sounds of their mentors, including Harold “Duke” DeJean and Milton Baptiste, men that left a legacy that remains a great part of the fabric and rich cultural traditions of New Orleans. This band plays music in the traditional New Orleans style considered the foundation for Jazz and Dixieland. As one of New Orleans’ leading traditional jazz bands, group members perform throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and at sea. The band plays during the Mardi Gras season, the Jazz and Heritage, French Quarter and other festivals, jazz funerals, concerts, “second-line” parades, airport greetings, conventions, receptions, nightclubs, weddings, and other public and private celebrations. Several band members have nationally selling CD’s and dedicate time to providing jazz education through lectures and workshops.
Including some of New Orleans’ finest talent, the band captures the somber music of classic hymns, dirges, and free-spirited songs, with the ability to provide the improvisation needed to honor the music, tradition and customs of New Orleans. The band also swings with the times and frequently blends sounds of the new wave of brass band music that adds a mix of funk and R&B. The musicians are top class players and include Jeffrey Hill, Robert “Rob” Hall, Kerry Hunter, William “Will”Smith, Darryl “Lil Duke” Adams, and Cayetano “Tanio” Hingle. Intent on carrying the torch of New Orleans traditional jazz this band is ready to help you understand why New Orleans is THE CITY THAT CARE FORGOT. These gents work well together and know how to blend the rich tone and warm sound of traditional jazz with creative arrangements that make your family, friends and guest want to jump out of your seats, stomp your feet, and dance all your cares away. This band is exciting, fun, unique and ready to entertain.
